(18,714 posts)Elvis had not recorded the song at this point when he appeared on Milton Berle. While he was certainly familiar with the version of the song recorded by Big Mama Thornton, it was the burlesque style arrangement he had heard in Las Vegas performed by Freddie Bell and the Bellboyss that Elvis was emulating. Soon after, it was added as a closing song for Elvis' concerts.
Initially, Elvis had no plans to record the song but was encouraged to do so by RCA execs. Elvis would appear on The Steve Allen Show on July 1, a performance in a tux performing to an actual hound that Elvis felt made him look foolish. His anger and frustration over the Allen appearance played out in his vocal performance the next day in the studio and you can hear it on the final version. Presley was so particular about how he wanted the record to sound that he took 30+ takes to finally settle on take he liked. He would record "Don't Be Cruel", the A side/B side depending on what single you look at, the same day & the following day Wlcis would take the train to Memphis for a July 4th concert at Russwood Park.
Art Wertheimer captured what are some of my favorite pictures of Elvis during that week stretch. You can almost feel the insecurity and anger coming off the pictures. Elvis would actually listen to the acetate demos of "Hound Dog" and "Don't be Cruel" on repeat on the train.
