Come for the shredding, stay for the songs! His chops get all the attention, but what's often overlooked is that he was flying the Deep Purple/Rainbow flag in the 80's and playing Stratocasters when those were no longer the thing. He sorta kinda had a band vibe with Rising Force which sorta kinda had a commercial aspect to it. He didn't create instrumental shredathons like the Mike Varney albums of the time, there was a singer and there were accessible songs with really good riffs and hooks and melodies. At the same time, he took the virtuosity and baroque influence to the next level and became the father of neoclassical guitar.
