just that I prefer a female vocalist...

Ok, Nina Simone is a legend, so it may not be a fair comparison with her on one side of the equation

But if it's not opera, I'll vote for Linda Ronstadt, Karen Carpenter and Patsy Cline. I'm not a country and western fan at all, but Patsy Cline did have an incredible voice. And Linda Ronstadt could sing anything, she was so versatile. She actually did sing a little opera, in fact.
So I'm with you about the preferred gender, if not about the preferred style of music.
Watch this, one of my favorite flash mob performances. Think Elmer Fudd singing "Kill the Wabbit" except these women sound a lot better than Elmer Fudd does. Wow, I wish I had been there!

(62,143 posts)There are a lot of great female vocalists out there and I do appreciate them.
But in terms of very favorite vocalists, records I'll buy, etc., I'd rather listen to men.
I don't know how much this sort of preference has to do with gender, since I don't know the gender of everyone posting here.
And as a straight female who once had a crush on Paul McCartney, I'm aware how that can factor in.
But it didn't factor into my thinking Eric Burdon was incredible in the Animals, for instance, when I was playing their music so much my parents were really sick of it.
I just prefer to listen to male singers. And have for as long as I can recall.

(13,797 posts)I assume.
It's not that I avoid male vocalists, if that were even possible, but out of my top 10 favorite vocal artists Rob Halford and Van Morrison are the only dudes to make the cut.
Also, Eric Burden was a monster vocalist for sure, I may have sold him short...

(62,143 posts)From "Aren't those moptops cute and isn't that a sweet little pop-rock song?" to "WOW! What was THAT?"
Btw, Eric Burdon isn't one of my all-time-fave rock vocalists, though he was definitely an early fave, like Steve Winwood.
My favorites are Paul Rodgers and Robert Plant, for rock. If we're talking about soul - Otis Redding (who I think was Paul Rodgers' idol).
I had never given much thought to how much I preferred male vocalists till people were listing favorite singers in the Lounge a while back and I looked at my list compared to others and thought, Hmmm. No women listed. Can't remember if I decided to add some.
And I love Chrissie Hynde. I love Tina Turner. And Susan Tedeschi, and Beth Hart, and other powerful women singers. Aretha, for soul.
I really admire female vocalists like Joni Mitchell, for instance, but I couldn't call myself a fan. Same for many other great female singers that I often see mentioned here. So while I'm happy to listen to occasional songs I hear by them, I don't listen to full albums.
As a feminist, I'm glad there are a lot of female singers doing well on the charts now - good for them - but I don't listen to them all that often.
I definitely don't like all male vocalists. Have never been a Rush fan, for instance, because of the vocals.
And there are a lot of great male vocalists like Bowie where I love some of the songs but don't listen to others at all because I simply don't think they sounded very good on those tracks.
