(3,398 posts)Who ran away with some of the bands money at one point.
Later, it was often played as a tribute to someone close to the band who had died.
I dont recall it ever sung with the genders reversed, but it was played many times, so its possible.

(24,571 posts)I think it's about Ron M. Could be wrong, but this is what I always thought it was about. Pigpen.

(3,398 posts)"He's Gone," as originally written, referred to the disappearance of Mickey Hart's father, Lenny Hart, who was acting as the band's manager, with a good deal of money. (See interview in Relix, vol. 5, #2, p. 24.) Since then, the song has become riddled with meaning, played often quite tenderly when someone close to the band dies.

(2,472 posts)It walked itself from one spot to another and the song is about the fan, lol. And He's Gone was definitely written about Mickey's dad after he took off with all their money. If I hadn't loaned my GD books to a friend, I could find the exact quotes, but I don't have them here now.

(2,472 posts)So, after I typed that, I googled Lenny Hart. Now I want to find out more about that guy! Arrested for the theft while he was baptizing people?!!? That in itself is pretty strange.
