That synth sounds like a DX7, but this song predates that synth. Might be a GS-1; which Yamaha released a few years earlier but wasn't a hit because it was too expensive. That's definitely FM synthesis though.
I wax a huge Mott/Hunter fan for many years. My first Mott album was Mad Shadows, which predates All The Young Dudes by at least 2 years
So, I'm always open to hear an Ian song.
