Videos Of One Of My Bands

This is the 3 piece that we had as a side project. Called the Apollo Project, because the only bass we had at that time (other than our regular bass player's stuff) was the piece of junk called an Apollo.
As I was a piano player, I understood bass, and as a guitar player, I knew where the notes were. So, I became the bass player. In this clips, I've been playing bass for a couple months
These are from a Battle Of The Bands. Had to pick 3 songs off their list 2 weeks before the date. At the Battle we being no gear. Play what's there. Instruments, amps, pedals, everything. A "picks & sticks" contest, because that's all we could bring. Guitar picks & drumsticks.
Each band had 20 minutes. Actually less, because each band had to off stage in time to let the next band set up. If a band caused the next band to be late, they get disqualified.
These are in the order we played them. As the 3rd one (Zombies) was covered by Santana, we decided to end the song like Soul Sacrifice. (OH, and on that song the harmonies are messed up when the guitar player forgot the words. Since I didn't know what he was going to sing, I had to sit out.) Also, in the intro I call it a hobby band. That's true. The four piece lineup was the actual endeavor.
Hope you enjoy.

Guitar player won best overall guitarist, drummer won best drummer.
I finished 2nd in bass. I won best keyboardist the year before, so no complaints.
$1,900 for 3 songs!
If my band made $633 per song, 80 dates per year, I would have retired from my real job at 50!

Three punchy numbers, and ending with a creative flourish...

Deserving of a tip of my flat cap.

I hope you'll continue to air out the vault.

We have 2 compilation DVDs. One by the soundman (Greatest Hits), one by the guitar player (Erratica).
I'm going through them trying to find a mix of one camera New Year's Eve gigs (to show the lights), some telethons we did, & some from a show a Chicago area producer filmed of our band in the around 1990.
I'll post some to YouTube as I go.

But all three were very enjoyable, Greg, and I can see why your power trio won.

Thanks for posting these!

Totally different look, kind of music, and scope of show.
I got one song rendered today. When I get 4 or 5 done, I'll post again.
Thanks for the positive feedback.

For the 3 piece lineup, I played bass.
For the 4 piece (the three of us, plus the regular bass player) I played keys & guitar.
This was a way for the 3 of us to stay sharp when the bass player couldn't be there due to studio engineering time.
The songlists didn't overlap at all. The 2 bands even had different names!

I played in bands from 1973 to 2007. More than 2,000 gigs.
Had to quit when my real job required so much international travel that I couldn't juggle it anymore. (Plus, I was 51, so getting old for getting home at 5 in the morning.)

Thanks for sharing.

Those "instant band" situations are always interesting, especially playing on unfamiliar gear.
