He had an accident and broke his back too. Can't help but wonder if people in his line of work have any health insurance.

Don't or it's not good.

I guess it depends if they are in a union or not like acting professionals have SAG which provides their insurance.Thats why every so often you'll see old actors or actresses on tv, they need a certain amount of acting hours to remain covered.

Musicians do have the AFM
