Related: About this forumFancy -- Bobbie Gentry -vs- Reba McEntire (Which version is your favorite?)
"Fancy" is a song written and recorded by Bobbie Gentry in 1969. The song depicts its heroine overcoming poverty to become a successful courtesan. Gentry's personal view on the song:[1]
The country song was a crossover pop music hit for Gentry. It was covered in 1990 by country music artist Reba McEntire on her Rumor Has It album. McEntire's version surpassed the original on the country music charts, reaching the Top Ten on Billboard's Hot Country Hits in 1991.
"Fancy" is my strongest statement for women's lib, if you really listen to it. I agree wholeheartedly with that movement and all the serious issues that they stand for equality, equal pay, day care centers, and abortion rights.

"Fancy" had been a part of Reba's repertoire long before she ever recorded the song and, if fact, she had to fight to even record the song. When she performs "Fancy", Reba fully takes on and becomes that role.

I thought about this-the Gentry version is much more a 60's style studio recording and it comes across in hearing the lyrics. Reba on the other hand is much more like a modern rough cut or live deal. The board I think trends to an older demo and we chose what we were raised on.

Mostly, yes I think you're right. I'd tend to agree with that observation. I often prefer the original to the cover version too.
But I did make an exception here when I voted for George Michael instead of Stevie Wonder.
