the movie was set in the 1930s and the Ragtime music era was pretty much over in the 1910s.....some 20 years previous.

It’s use in the movie is more artistically motivated than anything in my opinion.

In fact, for many years I performed in a ragtime orchestra and we made recordings and one snippet was used in a movie. I love ragtime music. I wasn't trying to disparage it. I was merely pointing out there was a disparity between the time the movie was set and the music that was used.
