(5,393 posts)It did surprise the hell outta me. It's so fiery.
But dang I hate this album cover. So 90's, so bad.

(8,815 posts)"Closer to Fine" didn't hit home for me until years after they hit. I went through a personal catharsis, and that song was the medicine I needed. Healing and letting go. It came on the radio as I was heading to Colorado for a cousin's wedding. My heart and mind were in tatters, but I carried on and then this song came on...

(8,815 posts)was when Made in Japan came out. To this day, the line up that had Gillan, Blackmore, Paice, Glover, Lord is who Deep Purple are to me. But the material from these founding members is special as well, much like what Syd Barret is to Pink Floyd.
The Polack MSgt
(13,797 posts)But I kinda liked all of them.
Tommy Bolin got ripped off IMHO - Deep Purple was dysfunctional and dying when he signed on... And so was he really.
Richie Blackmore was the most famous but probably the 3rd best guitarist in band history. In my opinion, Steve Morse is the best player in Deep Purple history... Also the best in Kansas' history, but they never released a studio record with Steve.
Steve Morse has also been Deep Purple's guitarist since 1996
Clash City Rocker
(3,546 posts)It seemed to be a rather superficial song, by the Beatles standards, until I heard this version. Then it sounded rather deep.
LuvLoogie
(8,815 posts)gives it soul. It's so cool.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(28,493 posts)but Linda Ronstadt's cover of "It doesn't matter any more"
Her version a sad lament. His is upbeat, very different. Ronstadt, to the best of my knowledge, was not a singer-songwriter, but an amazing interpreter of songs already out there.
Contrast her performance with Buddy Holly, the original:

(8,815 posts)knowledge that Linda Ronstadt was a Latina. When she came out with her album, Conciones de mi Padre, Mexicans all over the country were thrilled. She just nails these traditional songs and makes them her own. Her voice so sweet and powerful, is a natural fit for this genre.

(13,797 posts)But one of my troops convinced me that she was better in Spanish, I have that CD.
She kills. Every. Single. Track.

(28,493 posts)She attended Tucson High, I attended the cross-town rival Amphitheater.

(28,493 posts)Roy Orbison and Don McLean, Crying.
The differences aren't so great, but for me the Don McLean version is noticeably better. It's more tender and more intimate.

What a legend.
He did OK with a Neil Diamond tune

(13,797 posts)I'm not at all familiar with Sweet... Ballroom Blitz kinda left me cold and I never pursued any other tunes.
Like this one tho

(8,815 posts)But there are several awesome tunes, which provide context to Ballroom Blitz. Great guitar and drums throughout...

(13,797 posts)and now I need to order Desolation Boulevard.
BTW - Given that you have Richie Blackmore in your sig Line, I feel like I should apologize for my next thread.
I will be talking about how Steve Morse is the best player in DP history.

Here's a great cover of the other softest Sabbath tune ever

(71,926 posts)I listened to it for about six months before I realized the lyric wasn't "I'm going to jail." My stereo was lo-fi. Maybe the reefer had a little to do with it, too?

Clash City Rocker
(3,546 posts)This song appears in a great album of Grateful Dead covers called Deadicated. The bands bassist, Eric Avery, writes this in the liner notes...
This song meant a lot to me when I was too young (but trying) to grow facial hair, smoking too much pot and contemplating teen suicide. Before the glory of punk rock, I was a Grateful Dead fanatic but dont tell anyone it might be detrimental to my image.
The two people who wrote the song, Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, loved this version. I can never just listen to it once. True deadheads will pick up bits of Bird Song and The Other One. Trust me, its worth a listen.
happybird
(5,393 posts)and heard a good cover of Cassidy by the Dead. It sounded like a new/pop country group, a style I usually don't care for, but they did a darn fine job with the song.
Thought of this thread.
