1. He is a native of my hometown.

He rarely visited after he gained success as a musician but when he did he would be arrested as soon as he got off the train - for loitering - even though he had been in town about 3 seconds. The goal was to discourage his presence in that lovely Southern town of hospitality.

The standard practice was that someone from the white community would bail him out (blacks wouldn't be allowed to do so) and provide refuge for the night, or for his entire stay. My grandfather did this on several occasions.

A black man whose talent was respected in the North was just too much for the genteel Southern citizens.
