Ya know what, as much as people were mad that in 1989 Jethro Tull won

the 1st ever Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Grammy, I am ok with it.

I was ok with it back then too. Crest of the Knave is a badass album

Listen, Metallica was great and all, but I haven't cracked open And Justice For All in a decade.

And sorry Metallica heads, but the truth is Janes Addiction has a better reason to be angry than Metallica does.

Nothings Shocking was better than either of the Tull or Metallica records in 89

But I still hear people pisssing on Jethro Tull for that Grammy as if Crest of a Knave was an Abba record

This is s damn SOLID hard rock record

But ALSO beat Jane's Addiction (and that would've won in my book as well), Iggy Pop, and AC/DC.

I would say that beyond the fact this is stout company to triumph over, my biggest problem with it (to the extent that I GAF, which is very, very, VERY little ... I bet Lars is still pissed tho) is that Tull is a genre unto themselves. Kinda like ... Prince. Or They Might Be Giants.

I'm listening now for the first time honestly. It's pretty good, I'll give ya that. There's a LOT of Dire Straits sound on this baby.

But for the VERY FIRST EVER Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Grammy ... It should've been Metallica or Jane's.

But my point is twofold

1 - Crest Of A Knave was not the shambling wreck it's been portrayed as

2 - Metallica fans need to quit gnawing that bone

That vibe was pretty common in the late 80s... at least Ian was influenced by a classic

On the other hand, I thought "Love Over Gold" had a lot of "Crisis What Crisis?" in it

I always liked Tull: the rich content and tight precision. Thanks for the post.

it WAS a travesty. When the recipient is embarrassed to even get the award, you know something is bad wrong.

On the order of a life time achievement award or such and didn't take it seriously

Didn't realize it was the 1st year of a new category until the award show

Several Tull classics on here, and the tour for it was great as well. Maybe if Metallica hadn't mixed the bass so goddamn low, they would have had a chance.
