(33,643 posts)I think so incredibly highly of that record, I know every word to every song, I've heard it start to finish at least 150 times. Every song is a gem, it has so much emotional weight, half the songs have brought a tear to my eye at one point or another. The musicianship, the songwriting, the honesty/authenticity, and the HOOKS? Man, it's just a phenomenal record.

(2,220 posts)Every time I listen to it, something new jumps out and grabs me. Its one of the few records from that time period that I still listen to regularly.

(117 posts)Ive loved Lucinda and been a fan for as long as I remember. Ive seen her countless times live and make a point to never miss her when she passes through the area. I last saw her this past winter when she did the Car Wheels anniversary tour. It was really fun. She is always great live, and she always surrounds herself with the best musicians, whether in the studio or on the road. She also contributes to some other great music. I love her duet on Hurry Up Sunrise by Luther Dickinson.
RollingStone Magazine just reported that she plans to tour with Jason Isbell next summer. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/lucinda-williams-you-cant-rule-me-colbert-1050545/. That would put two of best songwriters in the business on the same stage. Hopefully we will have live music by the summer 2021.

(33,643 posts)I saw Jason on the Southeastern tour in a tiny club in Phoenix a couple months after came out ... stood in the front row like 6 feet from him the whole time. Stage was only like 2 feet high. So man, I was CLOSE. Cost me $17.50. Best 17.50 I ever spent.
Someone else around here was there, too, I forget who offhand.
I'm a huge fan of her contribution to this one ...

(117 posts)With Dwight Yoakam. Steve and Lucinda would be a pair to see together. I last saw Steve Earle a few years back in a small upstate NY venue and his son Justin Townes opened, just before he took off. Justin was a really terrible loss. But Jason Isbell Decoration Day by Drive-By Truckers is still one of his best, and I love his earlier solo stuff from Here We Rest and Sirens of the Ditch. One of my favorites is his cover of Candi Stantons Heart on a String.
I wish hed play more of his early stuff live now, but he seems to focus on his new albums and hits. Dress Blues got a lot of play in my household after my nephew was killed in Iraq. It still makes me cry.

(33,643 posts)Just a devastating and amazing song.
I also play Goddamn Lonely Love, first Truckers/Isbell song I ever heard. And it's still my favorite.
I also love that cover ... the one on the Live in Alabama CD is even better IMHO
That would've been an incredible lineup ... got that right!
I've seen Steve 4 times going back to Copperhead Road.
JTE
I love his first 3 records so much ... they're amazing and way under-rated.

(117 posts)Bandcamp has a bunch of recordings of Jason Isbell shows from his last tours. https://jasonisbell.bandcamp.com/music
There also are also a bunch of recent DBT shows. https://drivebytruckers.bandcamp.com/music
I also agree about the Heart on a String cover on the Live from Alabama. That entire recording is excellent. Jason disavowed it for a while, apparently due to a spat with the label because he wasnt earning money from it. The other covers he does that I really like are Pancho and Lefty and and Tecumsah Valley with Elizabeth Cook.
I have to say, Amanda Shires is great with the 400 unit on the fiddle, but I dont love her voice and as a singer, I prefer Elizabeth Cook. But Emmylou is still the best.
I wouldnt mind seeing Jason cover something by Gram Parsons and Emmylou.
And bringing it all back to Lucinda, this is my favorite cover of a Gram Parsons tune by Lucinda and David Crosby.

(33,643 posts)Emmylou is my FAVE ... Love Gram ... I've heard those Liz Cook covers already ... not a big fan of Amanda's voice but she's fine on the fiddle (cept when she's playing on songs she shouldn't be on like old DBT stuff ... which he never plays anymore, so ... all good).
I'll have to check out the bandcamp stuff, thanks!

(3,064 posts)Her two previous albums, Lucinda Williams, and Sweet Old World, were almost as good but this one is perfection. She's one artist that I have about every thing they've done. Her work is so superbly crafted.
I saw her at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels in early 2016 when Bernie and Hillary were neck and neck for the Democratic nomination. She endorsed Bernie onstage and I hollered out " Feel the Bern!"
Got a few looks from the audience, but WTF. A lot of them were probably Dotard supporters. Hope at least some of them regret their choice and help turn Texas blue. I'm living overseas now and am awaiting my absentee ballot, you know, the good ones as opposed to the evil mail in ones. Voting for Biden in Texas, of course.
With both conventions over, the ballots should be coming shortly.
And now, earbuds in for Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.
