Her hits began in 1957 with Donn Hecht's and Alan Block's "Walkin' After Midnight," Hank Cochran's and Harlan Howard's "I Fall to Pieces," Hank Cochran's "She's Got You," and Willie Nelson's "Crazy," and ended in 1963 with Don Gibson's "Sweet Dreams." Millions of her records have sold since her death. She won awards and accolades, causing many to view her as an icon at the level of Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley. She became the first female solo artist inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1973, ten years after her death. In 1999, she was voted number 11 on VH1's special The 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll. I can't come up with this nugget online, but if I am not mistaken, I heard years ago that she was number two in jukebox sales in 1959. You can probably win a bar bet on that one. Can anyone confirm this?

1. When we married back in 87, my wife hated all country music

Not surprising I guess - she's from Tokyo and liked Reggae and R&B mostly.

I was in the middle of a decade of boycotting C&W due to rampant shittiness in the industry back when we tied the knot, so we never talked to much about it.

She knew that I liked "Old Country" and had seen my album/Cassette/CD collection...

Any way we get assigned to a radio site in NW New York just south of Lake Ontario and the bartender at our local hang out was an older lady about 6 foot 2 without the beehive hairdo and 6'6" or so with it.

Her name was Shirley. She took a liking to my wife and I and we enjoyed going to the Falcon Lounge (now called Shirley's Place after she passed too young in a car accident) to hang out with the regulars.

Well Shirley LOVED Patsy Cline and Charlie Pride and Willy Nelson in that order so we all listened to her juke box picks quite often as we ate our Beef on Wick with horseradish or 15 cent wings, washing 'em down with 85 cent glasses of draft Old Vienna Lager.

One day my wife asked why the radio never played "Good Country" and then made a mix tape of Willy and Waylon and Patsy Cline (as one did back in the 90s) so we could have a change of pace tape in the car.

It was "Crazy" that broke through her dislike for country music - A twofer really since I explained that Willy wrote the song
