these guys are from my hometown.
i found out about them from an article from the show 'curious city' from wbez on dances invented in chicago. their fans invented a dance that translates- the little step from durango. it is basically a close up polka.
eta the article- https://www.wbez.org/stories/the-cha-cha-slide-and-more-which-dances-were-invented-in-chicago/40472322-b827-4118-946e-477efc8ffe58 there is a vid of the dance.

3. I played in a polka band once.
I knew the guys in the band, we were all music majors together and they had a polka band. All men. There is a big polka fest in our state every year and they were going to play on the big stage on the big night and their piano player got sick. I played for them, I had no idea what I was doing. I just tried my best, I was NOT a good piano player and polkas are hard and of course, we had been drinking all day long and dancing etc.
I fell in love with so many types of music from Mexico and I do not know when that happened but I got hooked hard. It might have been when I finally put satellite radio in my car. I really know nothing about it, I just listen when I can and it always just makes me feel like a million bucks, ya know? So what could be better than a Mexicano polka? Not much I don't think. I will check out that site and probably listen a lot. It always makes me feel good and these days we could all use that. |

4. i need to learn some of the old folks songs.
i had hidden epilepsy most of my life, and one of the things it did is mess w my muscle control. made me a flat alto. fixed now, taking voice lessons. i am not that bad.
it also made me left/right retarded. never could play an instrument, cuz i couldnt get the l/r low/high thing. even tho i went to catholic school and always had music. working on piano. i took spanish in hs, and could read it well enough to find stuff at the mercado. but when ppl spoke it i couldn't follow. the syntax confused me. now i am bien bien. brains are weird. even my accent is good. i need to find the sheet music for these guys songs, so i can understand them. good practice. |
