the Smothers Brothers Show got into a big fight with CBS and the government because they wanted Pete Seeger to sing that song on their show.
CBS would not allow it and there was talk of the Smothers Brothers walking out on one of the most popular shows on the network at the time.
He was eventually allowed to perform it on their show, but by then the mood was already established and the show was soon to be done.
Great show - great song - great man.
