Love Hurts -- Everly Brothers 🆚 Nazereth 🆚 Jim Capaldi 🆚 Roy Orbison

"Love Hurts" is a song written and composed by the American songwriter Boudleaux Bryant. First recorded by the Everly Brothers in July 1960, the song is also well known from a 1975 international hit version by the Scottish hard rock band Nazareth and in the UK a top five hit in 1975 by the English singer Jim Capaldi.

Roy Orbison covered "Love Hurts" in 1961 and issued it as the B-side to "Running Scared." While "Running Scared" was an international hit, the B-side only picked up significant airplay in Australia. Consequently, chart figures for Australia show "Running Scared"/"Love Hurts" as a double A-Side, both sides peaking at No. 5. This makes Orbison's recording of "Love Hurts" the first version to be a hit.

Orbison is great, but I prefer the Everly Bros on this one happybird Mar 2021 #3

I just think of him as the drummer for Traffic.

Will have to listen before voting.

Everly's and Roy deliver nice vocals too (neither of them can do wrong in this regard), but the only way to make this song interesting ... is to pour your heart into it like you're an actually hurt person delivering the performance.

Nazareth version comes closest to doing so.

Also, Nazareth's drummer is freaking awesome in this video.

A person could not be a more perfect embodiment of a year ... in this case ... 1975 ... than Nazareth's drummer in this video.

It can't be done.

and raise you one Skunk Baxter.

ETA: From what I can tell, it aired in ‘78 but was filmed in ‘74.

But if the dude playing lead guitar is Skunk Baxter, I'll concede 1974 and Skunk Baxter to you my friend

I saw that video a couple weeks ago and was bowled over by the absolute mid-70’s-ness of it all. It’s fabulous. The music ain’t too shabby, either.

These are all good. I'm mostly torn between Nazareth and Orbison. The Nazareth version is the first one I heard, but I love the Orbison sound.

Decisions, decisions.............

The sound of the Nazareth version invokes a sense a pain that the others don't ... and it's called Love Hurts, so ... yeah.

Orbison sounds beautiful, as always, but I don't feel from it. He definitely has OTHER songs I TOTALLY feel, to be clear.
