He was asked about the title and he said he was writing late into the night. When he looked at the clock, his blurry eyes couldn't tell if it was 25 or 26 minutes before 4:00 am, (hence 25 or 6 to 4). A songwriting mentor told him to write what he knows and feels. Lamm was tired but he wanted to finish a draft of the song; he'd already come up with the basic musical elements. In his late night fog was born a classic!

Check out the lyrics with this perspective and it all makes sense. When we first heard the song in the 1970s, everyone assumed it was some kind of drug reference!

I met Lamm a few years ago at a professional function and he was very gentlemanly and friendly. Part of the reason I went into the music world was because of his music and it was fun to tell him that.

"Saturday in the Park" and "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is" are another pair of absolute classics of his, among others...

That section of the record is white! I slowed it down and learned it in a different key then transposed it. One day in 2007, I went with a band to Rockford, IL to open for the New Cars with Todd Rundgren. We did a version of a Cure song and put part of this song in the middle. I got to play the solo note for note in front of thousands of people.
