Where's Sly? : Medeski, Martin, & Wood

It’s story time!

I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song. This album (It’s a Jungle In Here) was the intermission music at a Phish show at Hampton. I was... altered, so it was intense. Unforgettable.

After the show, when our crew reassembled for the trek back over to La Quinta (best pronounced “La la la la La Quinta,” ala La Bamba), we were all asking each other, “Man, did you hear that intermission music?!?”

It was a freakin’ Hampton Phish show, in the glory years, somewhere in ‘95-‘98 (I went to all of them), perhaps even at one of the storied Fall ‘97 shows, so it made a BIG impression. Phish at Hampton was always insane and incredible. But, man... that intermission music! It melted my face.

Fortunately, one of the crew had heard it before and knew what the band was called: MMW.
And so, another band was added to the must-see-as-many-times-as-possible list.

Spring always makes me nostalgic for the live music I used to pursue.

I could almost feel the dextro-rotary lysergic acid diethylamide tartrate-25 coursing through my brain as you explained the scenario

pretty much anything we wanted to carry.

We knew a pasture that would grow psilocybin mushrooms after a rainstorm- they'd sprout out of the cow pies. We picked a garbage bag full, and cooked 'em down into a slurry in a big stock pot. We filled bottles with the psilo-slurry and brought 'em into the Grateful Dead show and passed them around. My memorable quote for the evening: "I think I may have done a little more than I intended."
