2. I read that book a few years ago...

It's just sad on all counts. It's pretty obvious that Reich was quite eccentric by that time, but the intensity with which the federal government hunted him down for what, at absolute worst, would be preaching pseudoscience, says a lot more about how their puritanical impulses reacted when confronted with questionable science that had an implied sexual aspect. It was almost as if they regarded his theories as dangerous pornography rather than scientific hypotheses (of whatever validity).
