(51,590 posts)CDs don't allow you to spin the wheel and play with the cover art. Sticky Fingers, Satanic Majesties Request and The Velvet Underground have really fun covers too.

(33,643 posts)Now ... do you have an old copy of In Through The Out Door on vinyl from circa 1979 ... cause it has a SECRET!!!
And not just that there's different versions of the cover with pictures shot from the POV of different bar patrons ...
BigmanPigman
(51,590 posts)What is the secret? I must know now! I never heard of this and I had two ex boyfriends who knew rock well and never told me a secret about it. Maybe they were unaware too.

(33,643 posts)Do you still also have the original record sleeve ... Inside the album cover? Is it all white, and does it look kinda like a black/white drawing of the album cover, with no color to it?
Edit: just found mine, it's not just like the cover, but it's got a 'bar theme' with ashtrays and glasses and lighters and such?
BigmanPigman
(51,590 posts)a silkscreen image of objects on a bar (sort of like before and after pictures).

(33,643 posts)Like traces of like ashtray, cigs, zippo, bottle, etc?
BigmanPigman
(51,590 posts)a little blue, green and pink over a graphic balck and white image like an old Warhol silkscreen.

(33,643 posts)Originally, that sleeve was straight black and white ... and the way that you actually revealed those colors ... was to take a cotton ball or paper towel, dampen it, then lightly rub the image ... and there's kind of embedded ink in the sleeve, so when you get it wet, all those colors came out.
They didn't announce it or anything, someone just figured it out (afaik) ... I had that album for like 12 years before someone showed me 'the secret' while I was in college ...
Are both sides already colored? If not you could do the same on the other side of the sleeve.
EDIT: BTW I just found my 'spinner' copy of LZIII ... one of the pics of Plant you can pull up in one of the holes in the middle/right, he looks HELLA BAKED ... lol ...

(51,590 posts)Both side have already been "colorized" but I just tried a tiny spot and there is still a lot that hasn't been dampened completely yet. I don't want to mess it up since it smears easily. Now that I look at it closely it has been "smeared" outside of the black outlines/borders by a previous owner. If you look at the cover one side has a black and white photo and the other side has a different but similar photo. However, one side has a purposely placed swipe mark going across the image exposing color underneath. I guess that was supposed to be the "clue".
Thanks for telling me about this. I never would have known about this. I love my albums and have a lot of rare stuff and other stuff that is simply cool and fun. This falls into the cool/fun category.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)meant to be a 'clue', good catch, never thought of that exactly.
Also interesting (though not nearly as obscure) is that there's a bunch of different versions of the album cover, basically the various covers (both front and back) are shots taken from the PoV of each bar patron & I think there's 5 people total ... so there's quite a few possible combos for which pic you have on the front and which you have on the back IIRC.
And that's the reason for the album coming in the paper bag sleeve the way it did originally, so it'd be a surprise which one you got.

(51,590 posts)I think different albums had to be "covered" in the past like when John and Yoko where naked.
This album design was a real, planned secret I think. Well done Led Zep!
Thank you Mr. L for making my Sunday brighter!
