(41,780 posts)I saw them 50+ times in Athens GA
And knew Peter Buck before REM.
After I moved back to Maine I never thought I would see them again.
They did a gig at U Maine Orono that fall with Let's Active
I went to the men's room and ran into Michael Stipe.
I was wearing a Pylon Chomp tshirt and he said "what are you doing here!". I told him that I lived in Maine.
And he invited me back stage to drink beer.
I asked him if my girlfriend and brothers could come too and he said yes and waited for us.
We all drank beer and swapped Athens stories and left when Let's Active went on - we wanted to see them. We did the best thing thing you could ever do when meeting with a band.
Michael put his arm around me and my brothers as we left.
In the middle of their set they dedicated this song to "that guy with the Pylon shirt "
The local cool radio jocks we were hanging with were astonished.
True story.
Yup

(41,780 posts)Kate came to Maine and gave my Aunt a gold record for Cosmic Thing.
She read them their Tarot cards at a party in Manhattan and it came true.
Hence the name Cosmic Thing
She's in the album credits.
True story
Edit that should be El Dorado

(33,643 posts)SUPER EPIC, actually.
Damn.
I also love this album ... not quite AS MUCH as the other IRS albums, but the really good ones are really good. This Pylon cover being one of the best.
My FAVORITE is Voice of Harold, but this is probably second. And then Ages of You. And Burning Down.
Then all the VU/Lou Reed covers.
If you have the Spotify, here's my Best of IRS mix ...

(33,643 posts)When I'm saying IRS I'm entirely referring to the output of R.E.M. on IRS records, i.e. their first 6 records
