Music Appreciation
Related: About this forumyou know those songs that you absolutely have to listen to at ridiculously loud volumes?
Even after 20+ years I still have to crank this friggin tune when it comes on.
And ESPECIALLY the last 1:40.
Like, it really can't even BE 'too loud' no matter what

One Tree Hill will always be my fave on TJT album though ... even though they never played it on that tour ...

(33,643 posts)Apart from Slow Ride ... which just barely qualifies ...
They're now up there with Ted Nugent in my book, who has Stranglehold (live) and Free For All to his name
I'm not sure if all 4 of them put together are as good as the one really great REO Speedwagon Song (Roll with the Changes) though

(33,643 posts)And I'll tell you why briefly.
Basically this album was recorded in a whole bunch of different locations (unlike III and IV for example) and it's really obvious if you listen to it critically with good equipment (which is the sorta nerdy thing I like to do lol )
The recording on THIS song sounds like crap to me. As do the recordings on a number of other songs on it. Not that I don't like the song (it's not brilliant but it's quite decent, esp. the drumming), I just don't like how it sounds. Tons of compression, tape drop-outs, no coherent soundstage to it ... overall it's just a mushy-sounding mess, which is a shame to me.
OTOH, play this other song off of it, right after you've listened to The Ocean ... Jimmy did most of this by himself, at his home studio ... and it sounds absolutely brilliant, recording-wise. It's like world's better-sounding than how The Ocean sounds.
What I'm getting at is I really wish that everyone had just GONE TO JIMMY'S PLACE and recorded all these songs. Cause his home studio was DIALED.
And despite its lack of rocking, I'd much rather crank The Rain Song up really loud vs The Ocean. And I feel like that just shouldn't be

(4,588 posts)It was done by Storm Thorgerson, the same guy who did Pink Floyds album covers. I had no idea.
Maybe someday that little factoid will pop up on Jeopardy.

(33,643 posts)I thought I read somewhere it's Robert's son Karak on the cover. The one that sadly passed away not long after. Could be wrong on that though.

(33,643 posts)Nothing against the tunes, I do enjoy some punk, and I love the DIY ethos and all but those recordings are unlistenable to me, and they just don't get better-sounding the louder you play them.
It's like they're recorded with a mic hanging from the ceiling into someone's boom box lol.
Although, maybe if I had a boom box to play it back on
Alright if I'm fair the second one isn't TOO bad sounding. To be clear the tunes are cool I just don't, like, care for the 'recordings' if you will.
Now this right here ... this is a punk song that I can listen to at ear-splitting volumes, and usually do ...

(14,549 posts)I never give up. I look for sounds I can identify with every day.
Rancid is a grand band.
Hope you had a chance to see them play live.
Sounds are important...so are the emotions a song arises.

(33,643 posts)In fact it was this very tour. Also there was Adam Ant and Mick Jones' Big Audio Dynamite. Rancid kicked both their asses handily

(64,852 posts)Apparently, it was a lot of songs for me!
I remember the liner notes from the Layla album.
Tom Dowd wrote "Listen to it loud!"
Oh...and here's one of those songs for me.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)"This music has been mixed to be played loud so turn it up"
And they are right.
Disintegration is another album that sounds really great really loud.
Especially with a tab under your tongue
Radar Love's a goodie. So is their other, later one about the bullet hitting the bone, forget the name offhand ...

(64,852 posts)And, the song you're thinking of is "Twilight Zone".

One of my all time favorite songs actually.

Still puzzled AF as to how I missed them in the 90s??

(4,588 posts)Watched a reaction video last night (Ocean Size), so played the album during prep today at work. Its been a while.
Dang, that thing is a masterpiece. Especially at full volume.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)It's a freaking killer album, and was on my turntable constantly for months back in 1988-1989 (college, baby).
I will say, however ... it kinda sounds shitty, recording-wise.
I don't know if there's single note coming thru that's under about 80Hz. Bass guitar and drums have zero 'impact'.
It's 'good loud' just cause it rocks, and is a great album.
EDIT: Lol, I take it back, I had my soundcard in analog discrete 5.1 mode (best for video games) ... switched to digital 2-channel ... THERE IT IS!
It does sound pretty great loud after all, my bad

Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)kindof a 'bonus track' on Nothings Shocking.
Alright, so if we're doing that era ... this is another song that cannot physically be played 'too loud' for me
The whole album is like that actually ... but having a 900W RMS 15" Paradigm Sub really helps in this equation ... it's SUCH a thick recording in the bass region.

Yeah, I probably still want one.
The live version on XXX is the shit.

(33,643 posts)ya gotta depend on me, now, your vision is dead!
I also ADORE their cover of Rock and Roll on the debut. So freaking good.
See my above post though
I don't see how one could love Nothings Shocking and not also love Siamese Dream, just sayin.

(4,588 posts)Corgans voice always sounds so whiny to me. Its a total turn off, even though I can appreciate the music.

And Mayonaise is really not 'whiny Billy'

(4,588 posts)Tweeprise, man.
I love Tweezer, but the reprise gets me so amped. The louder, the better, especially when Mike drops in with the brown note, lol! Its great live, the studio version is the first Phish song I ever adored, many moons ago.

(33,643 posts)and Paradigm 15", with my Anthem Statement D1 Preamp ... I gotta tell ya.
Freaking phenomenal recording, and song.
I gotta couple for ya, maybe a little off the beaten path ... both sound very kickass very loud

(4,588 posts)its a good one, and it does sound great loud. The beginning reminds me a bit of Joe Walsh.
The Third Eye Blind one makes me think of AC/DC.
While making dinner just now, the shuffle on my Albums playlist hit on this beauty:
Thats another full album which sounds excellent at top volume. Their first album, too.
I miss the dancing and hallucinogens of the 90s.
