I was trying to keep it mostly on the upbeat tip, and was thinking Billy Austin, Over Yonder, and Ellis Unit One are all kinda cut from the same cloth, so overall I felt like it just needed one of the three.

The last verse of Ellis Unit One is maybe the most crushing one he ever wrote, so unbelievably powerful (to me anyway) that I went with that one ... but I love Billy and Over Yonder as well!

songs about people who’ve had hard times.

Ellis Unit One is an excellent choice, as are the other 69 songs.

I swear that Earle’s “Revolution Starts Now Tour” brought me out of a deep funk after Kerry lost in 2004.

It was cathartic, there was a LOT of blasting the first 3 tracks back then in particular.

Overall for me Jerusalem was a bit more timely in that regard though ... got me through Gore losing.

So many choices when it comes to Steve Earle, and I wouldn't kick any of the 71 off the list.

But... And this isn't intended as a criticism, I would include these 2

Hard Rock Steve

Front Porch Steve

Prior to say ... Jerusalem ... every song on every album is worthy.

After that, things became a bit spottier. Great ones mixed with good and okay. Not really much 'bad' or anything, but in particular Train A Comin thru The Mountain are just pure aces ...

No one could convince me that I Feel Alright isn't his overall best top to bottom record. More loosely followed by probably Copperhead and El Corazon, but it gets debatable after the #1 for me

not even my list. there are some on there that would be on my list. but you have at least a half dozen songs i could never hear again, and die happy.

'i'll never get out of this world alive' is prolly my fave, even tho he changed a lot of hank's lyrics and he doest do all the verses. working on that one in my voice lessons. love to sing it.
current fave is 'pocket full of rain' off low highway.

agree on a lot of them, tho.
city of immigrants, some dreams, god is god, gallway girl, willing.

ferrealz steve earle saved my life. a dozen albums on shuffle got me through one of the worst couple of years of my life. every day it was a different song that spoke to me.
still my go to when i'm not sure which end is up.
