Kris Kristofferson heard Goodman at a coffee house and was eager to sign him (of course). And Goodman basically said, "If you think I'm good, you should hear this friend of mine" and that's how Prine's got signed to a label.
That's the story I read, anyway, as told by Kristofferson.
