Older, more country but still classic Southern Rock
Low hanging fruit, but still a classic that hits hard

(25,048 posts)My address is New York, New York 10029. The state is right there!
Heres a funny story. The guys who composed NY, NY wrote it in about 45 minutes when their first stab at the song was rejected by Martin Scorsese. They were annoyed but knocked out the song in anger. Obviously, it was accepted.
Try to imagine the success that song has enjoyed!
How about New York State Of Mind?

My wife and I play a game called Drop The Needle. (We invented it in the 70s when we used turntables.) Basically, you agree on a topic or subject then take turns playing a song that fits. The more obscure, the better! Its a great drinking game.

(17,557 posts)was always a part of our semester finals in Music History in the late 60's. We would have to identify composers and the composition.
We used to 'cram' for the finals by getting a stack of albums from the music school library and sit around listening to them all - but even though they were LP's (33 1/3 rpm) we played them at 45 rpm just to get through them faster! All of the music sounded like it was played by "Alvin and the Chipmunks!"

(25,048 posts)I went to Manhattan School of Music and one professor was notorious for playing themes from Beethovens symphonies and quizzing us students which symphonies and movement the theme came from. It was brutal because he did the same thing in his Mahler class!
Our game is just a silly pastime.

(3,064 posts)And as for how little you know, I'll have to disagree with you. You know plenty and are always listening to new things, something I'm neglectful on.
You really do a great service to MA and would make an excellent moderator when the position opens again.
Just my $.02.

(3,064 posts)The first time I heard it I was dumbstruck by its beauty and poignancy.
Did a little Wiki search on it and at first no one wanted anything to do with it. But it was nominated for a Grammy and won song of the year by the Academy of Country Music.
The writers were sued by the writers of Rocky Top for copyright infringement, saying the melody was too similar to theirs. And they won the suit and got credit as co writers. I myself don't hear enough similarity to warrant a lawsuit, but that's me.
And David Frizzell is a younger brother of Lefty Frizzell.
Tanuki
(16,448 posts)Thank you for the addendum. I had no idea that Boudleaux and Felice Bryant sued, much less successfully. Like you, I don't really "get" the similarity, but my ear is not tuned to that level of analysis. I also did not know that Sandy Pinkard was one of the co-writers. My favorite Pinkard and Bowden song is the snake handler classic Shake a Snake:

(33,643 posts)Plus Mississippi is better tune, though I don't dislike Virginia.
Not liking new Train I get, but their first 3 records are brilliant IMHO, and nobody will convince me different.
I also love their recent recreation of Led Zeppelin II.
