Sadly, Douglas Trumbull— the FX expert who created the scenes in 2001 and many other films-- passed away last week.

A music business friend of mine gave me a CD of the original score that 2001 director Stanley Kubrick commissioned from composer Alex North. After Mr. Kubrick heard the score, he rejected it opting to license the recordings of the classical music he used in his temp track.

One afternoon, I put the DVD of 2001 in my player and cued up the scenes from the movie that I thought matched the titles on the CD. While Mr. North’s score is terrific and evocative, Mr. Kubrick made the right choice.
