I've always thought that the first three verses were written about Abraham, Martin, and John, and then Bobby died, and the last verse was added.
No matter, it's a powerful song, and I was around when it first came out.

A famous song that was changed after Bobby Kennedy's death was "Sympathy for the Devil" -- the Stones had started recording it just before his death, and they changed "Who killed Kennedy" to "Who killed the Kennedys."
