He probably still would have lost the nomination to Humphrey. In 1968, you could round up enough delegates in back room deals to win. HHH entered NO state primaries, but the "smoke filled rooms" sent him to the general election where he lost to Nixon (who killed peace talks with Hanoi in order to bloody up Johnson and Humphrey).

It was an awful year.

I felt like I wanted to die.

Tonight it will be 54 years since he was shot.

We'd be living in a very different world if he hadn't been assassinated -- if he'd defeated Nixon that fall, as I'd been sure he would.
