It wasn't country then. It was western. "T Texas" Tyler, Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, Sons of the Pioneers, Bing Crosby's western songs, Elton Britt. Western was about being a "lonesome cowboy." Country added topics to the genre.

My lover/partner of 23 years grew up one town over, in Clifton, N.J. --- Same thing. Western music.

This came to us from a station in Newark, N.J., WAAT. That station became a public radio staton in 1970's and that was the end of country, western or anything like it. The station only plays jazz now.

It wasn't until the mid '50's that I heard Benny Goodman, Dorseys and Glenn. I went wild for them... every '33 I could get my hands on. My future father-in-law, saw them all. His uncle was a projectionist in Newark, N.J. at one of the theaters where the bands played when they weren't showing movies. F-I-L was invited in the projection/lighting booth during many of those shows.
