Cream - Sunshine Of Your Love (studio+live 1967 - my nominee for first heavy metal song)

A huge hit, recorded in spring 1967 and released in November. A year before the Beatles' " Helter Skelter" and before Blue Cheer's cover of "Summertime Blues."

Btw, this article by rock journalist Richard Havers - https://www.udiscovermusic.com/in-depth-features/metal-music-heavy-thunder/ - has some good background on the origins of heavy metal. He mentions Cream's 1966 cover of Muddy Waters's "Rollin' and Tumblin'" but that doesn't sound like heavy metal to me. "Sunshine Of Your Love" does - and it crashed onto the scene with the album release.
