The big band era was the second best time for music from the bands you mentioned to Billie Holiday and John Coltrane

And I distinctly remember what I thought the story line was from when I was a kid. I've since changed it, and I made it a little sadder.

Between you and someone you loved and lost, this is a super happy song and it shouldn't bring sadness to you and you shouldn't bum out people around you

The day they knocked down the pally
My sister stood and cried
The day they knocked down the pally
Part of my childhood died, just died

Is super-happy. But I think the video itself depicts an unhappy marriage toward the end. The brother-in-law is obviously waiting outside for the concert to be over so he and Ray's sister can return to their estate, and the sister is enjoying herself, but she also seems melancholy. Toward the end when the spiv brother-in-law has come in and is standing in the mezzanine, I think the last shot of him and his wife-then-girlfriend in younger days dancing until the pally closed is his reflecting on happier days. And considering the song is inspired by Ray Davies' sister who was the first to give him a guitar (dying on his birthday while out dancing after giving it to him - weak heart) and whose husband was reportedly abusive, I think it was a way for Ray to stick it to him.
