17 January 1967. An article in the Daily Mail reported there were 4,000 holes in the roads of Blackburn, Lancashire. Beatle John Lennon said he used the article as the inspiration for the classic song, A Day in The Life, on the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album.

and the Beatles were threatened with Sgt. Pepper not being released if they didn't change the lyrics:

I read the news today, oh boy!
4,000 purple holes in Albert's arm
and though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill up Albert Hall.
