of Janis as a singer and songwriter. It’s more well-known that Jimi Hendrix was and chaperoned her on their outings.

Her early song, Society’s Child, showed musical genius that astounded Leonard Bernstein.

Her life really would make a serious movie. Especially when you remember what a bad guy Bill Cosby was to her, using his power to block a 15yo girl’s music career.

Boys ran into some of the same things. We were judged on how good-looking we were, how athletic, how socially adept, how "manly," etc. This chess-playing math/science geek lost out on all those criteria.

But, I avoided the nerd label by being a varsity basketball player.
Dodged that bullet.
