I've had enough of the Infiniti ad with the kid orchestra butchering "Sprach Zarathustra."

Not only is it painful to hear but it is insulting to student musicians.

No kid's orchestra director would make the attempt. Kids that age should be performing "Bill Grogan's Goat." The message seems to be that student musicians are really bad. I was unlikely to ever buy an Infiniti, I'm not into conspicuous consumption, but there is no risk now.

Classical music gets so butchered. Even classical music stations do it, never mind the deviants who create ads.

I don't want to even think of the travesties.

The exception I make (for myself) is to try to play transcriptions of pieces for piano. In fact, a whole lot of pieces were worked out on a piano by their composers.

Oh, the "cartoon" exception. How many of us first learned of classical works from Bugs and friends? At least, I don't think the music was doctored (much)

Strauss was an amazing composer. For the bombast of Zarathustra and the ferocity of Elektra, he wrote lovely Viennese style pieces, and wrote heavenly music for the female voice. And then there's the Alpine Symphony, complete with thunderstorm sound effects.

Saturday's Met opera will be Elektra, and the Sacramento State late night opera the same day (capradio.org, streaming online if you aren't in FM range) will be Rosenkavalier. The latter has an enormous range of emotions, from the crude Baron Ochs, to the three ring circus of his tormentors, to the out of this world duet of Sophie and the Marschalin. All in one opera.

Since I started subbing I've met several band directors, Jr Hi & HS.
Most won't embarrass themselves or the kids.. They'll find more suitable material.
Those junior high band/orchestra teachers have the patience of Gandhi! I've heard a dozen of them and......they're not good. The kids who can actually play stick out like a panther in the snow!
I've heard a couple HS bands, though, that were really good! Big schools though, so they're picking all the better & best.
So, I agree that directors wouldn't do that to the kids, but don't agree on how good a grade school orchestra is likely to be. I think good ones are rare, as I'm 0-12 in that regard.

All that is expected is that they learn and not be embarrassed or discouraged.

Student musicians of the age shown in the ad should be striving for a characteristic sound on their instrument, being in tune with the rest of the ensemble, and learning to balance and blend. They would be playing Bach chorales for educational purposes and "Bill Grogan's Goat" for fun.

The ad is an insult to student musicians and their teachers.
