I had never seen either before!
Wyethia are found throughout the west, but if these are Wyethia Elata (the kind with curly leaves) then indeed, most are in Mariposa and Madera counties, some in Fresno county.

I didn't want to detract from the tribute above, so separately, here is the FUZZ in mule ears.
Petals are just emerging.

The patch that this one is in is curlier and fuzzier than the rest.
It's pretty wonderful all the various plant zones in CA, like your Jacaranda.
