A small center picture with a blurry closeup on each side. It's really annoying, just show me the damn picture already.

(18,642 posts)sounds like it is a landscape view of a portrait photo w/filler on the sides. Pretty common.

(11,010 posts)If the phone is being held vertical, it blurs out the sides around the picture.

(3,162 posts)If the photo was shot in a vertical format, (e.g. a cellphone), the blur is added when it's shown on a horizontal screen, (TV or computer screen). The alternative would be to simply have black space on either side.

(10,778 posts)The BEST alternative would be to make portrait mode video COMPLETELY ILLEGAL and require phones to be designed so they CAN'T shoot video like that!
Okay, that's a little extreme -- maybe it should just be illegal to upload them to the web.

(3,162 posts)I can't begin to tell you how much I hated vertical video. It took one of my millenial kids to set me straight. They explained that so many people are watching the video in their phones that it made more sense to shoot it that way.
However, it still rubs me the wrong way.
