This storm was a fire starter. I already had a crew on the way to a lightning fire about seven miles from the lookout.

10. Fire Season 2025 ended for me on September 17, 2025.

I was extended by two weeks this year because of drought and warm weather. Normally, we shut down the lookout shortly after Labor Day.

The Idaho Panhandle has a short season for most lookouts because of high elevations (7000'+) and high latitudes (47°N and higher). Late August usually brings season-ending rains, and early September can bring snow. Last year (2024) I had snow at the lookout on August 31.
