(60,301 posts)You attach it to your tripod and put your camera on the rail.

I first frame the shot, get the focus close with the lens, then I carefully turn the knob on the rail to fine tune it. Some times I have to reframe and refocus.
You can get elaborate ones that move back and forth and side to side.

extension tubes
I've looked into them, but don't know what kind of lens to use with them. I have a macro lens.
I've also seen incredible macro with a reversed wide angle lens.

you don't need bellows or extension tubes. I have experience with extension tubes, so I decided that was the way to go. Maybe some day I will get a Macro lens, but until then the extension tubes will do. Another alternative is Bellows.
Higher the magnification, the harder the shot. At high magnification, any slight breeze can screw up the image.
The lenses I use with extension tubes are the Yashinon DX 50mm 1.7 and the Industar 50-2 50mm 3.5. The Industar was used for this shot. Both lenses were used and very reasonably priced.

(60,301 posts)and some turn out. That was the one keeper out of 30 plus images I took around various yards.
BTW, a garden kneeling pad is an essential part of your macro kit.

(60,301 posts)The Henbit is edible, so I feel shame as I dig it out of the yard.
