Misty Sunrise Over Derbyshire

The Sun and Fog contested
The Government of Day –
The Sun took down his Yellow Whip
And drove the Fog away –

‘The Sun and Fog Contested’ (c. 1871) by American poet Emily Dickinson.

Low-lying Stratus and distant Cirrus spotted at sunrise by Jemma Mickleburgh...over Mam Tor in the Peak District of Derbyshire, England.

One rather thinks that the Cloud Appreciation Society might well be English, given the number of the images which are from the UK, and also there is something quintessentially British about images of sheep.

Here's the entire (only two stanza) poem

The Sun and Fog contested —
The Government of Day —
The Sun took down his Yellow Whip
And drove the Fog away —

But when the Sun had rested
And hid his Whip of Light —
The Fog laid down his Woollen Wrap —
And owned the hushing Night —

One of my favourite painters has long been William Holman Hunt who created this work (variously titled Our English Coasts or Strayed Sheep) in 1852
