Always one of my challenges is to get a photo of a heron and the bison together. Generally they don't cooperate at all. Not only did they cooperate this morning but the heron decided to catch the morning sun. So it has been too cold for doing much of this, plus I have been busy doing other stuff, but just thought I would share. Still take my camera around when I take walks.

(15,812 posts)I had to change the exposure because the light was so bright on the heron that an automatic setting would have been a complete washout. It wasn't as dark out as the photo appears. It is just that the sun was shining on the heron but not on anything else (kind of near daybreak, and some clouds out).

(22,380 posts)it is like a painting, and I agree, the colors, and the variety of focus, and the light spell "oil" painting.
I can't remember, it's been so long now, if you entered the animal contest, and what you've got in there. The one that is in abeyance til I can run it.
You may consider putting this one in.
Before I start the contest I will offer a 24 hour opportunity for all who want to swap out their photo.

(15,812 posts)I was hoping for a spectacular sunrise but no such luck. I love it that I go there looking for one thing, and then find something completely different.
I am not abandoning my poor squirrel after all this time!!

(14,899 posts)The colors, the lighting, the composition . . . all spot on.
And I had to chuckle at the beginning of your description "Always one of my challenges is to get a photo of a heron and the bison together." It sounds amusing to me simply because of my location. Herons abound but bison? No. So combining the two in a photo would never cross my mind.
Again, I applaud you on this photo!

(15,812 posts)I am guessing the bison field is about ten or fifteen acres, but I could be wrong. To get this particular shot they need to be sort of huddled in a certain area about 1/4 acre in size. I have the combo in other photos, but mostly they aren't as dramatic, because in this case they are up on the hill. Anyway, it is more difficult now than it used to be because they shipped out most of the bison to the Tennessee Safari zoo near Jackson. They have more land and can take care of them better.

(1,080 posts)a watermark on this photo when you post it on the Web. It's a beautiful picture (!) and I wouldn't be surprised to see it stolen and reproduced for sale. I've looked at it several times and it's a piece of art that I would gladly display in my home (if my home wasn't a dump).

Thanks for the suggestion!
I do think somewhat about copyright issues even though I am not a professional. I wouldn't totally mind if someone wanted to use this or any other small(!!!!) pixel picture in some way if they happened across it, but it would really tick me off for someone to sell it. Sheesh.

(90,794 posts)The combination of animals, the beauty of the scenery, the detail of the bird and the soft wonderful background of the bison.
All the elements come togather and you have captured them so well.
The light, the composition... the rule of thirds is standing up and applauding.
Celebration
(15,812 posts)I just noticed the rule of thirds! I rarely think consciously about that but maybe unconsciously.
The lesson in this is that I need to get my butt up at daybreak every morning and hope for a partly cloudy dawn and some cooperative animals! Most of my photos actually need to be gauged on a scale that has to do with cooperation from unpredictable wild (or in the case of the bison, not quite wild) animals.

(90,794 posts)About the only bird I can count on to sit still for me is the Mockingbird. Well, Robins are fairly fearless and they don't care if I am nearby. They usually hang around with smaller birds who do care though.
If only animals knew we want to shoot them using only a camera. (The evil bird knows this and taunts me - I'm convinced of it)
Still, your photo...magnificent!
(I still have to think about the rule of thirds)
