A few shots from my trip to Johnstown this weekend (which was quite cold and seems to be a recurring theme with me at the moment).
Johnstown is full of bridges, this is just one of many
Johnstown has an inclined plane that you can ride up and then take photos. This is Johnstown at night.
Johnstown consolidated all 5 Catholic parishes into one. This has left many decommissioned/empty churches in the community. This is one that they rent out for occasions. We happened upon it when an event planner came outside for a smoke and he was nice enough to let us wander around briefly. He was preparing the church for a 50th wedding anniversary celebration.
Outside of same church
It's an interesting community that I'd like to visit again when it's warmer.

(13,259 posts)This is pure iconic old industrial Pennsylvania, with the light inside the building (and a few other lights farther out), the bridge, the hills beyond, the lowering sky. Love this picture.

(20,886 posts)It has a church of every possible denomination and cemeteries that reflect every war we have ever fought with different flags marking the graves. Also where the Deer Hunter was filmed.
Do I have the right town?

(14,040 posts)but we did visit a HUGE cemetery. The locals claimed it's one of the largest in the US and I can see how it would be.
However, I don't think the Deer Hunter was shot there.

(46,436 posts)because my first thought when I saw the top picture was, "This looks like the Deer Hunter." It's a very evocative shot.

(11,441 posts)I think "The Deer Hunter" was filmed elsewhere in PA, and OH.
Johnstown has Grandview Cemetery, one of the largest in PA. Nearly 800 unidentified victims from the 1889 flood are buried there.
Not sure about the churches, but it wouldn't surprise me. As a kid, I remember many beautiful old churches. And taverns. And corner stores. Aaaah, good memories.

(14,040 posts)We went into the Flood Museum and it took about 30 minutes for the entire town to be wiped out by the flood (which was caused by a dam failing upriver).

(28,484 posts)Your first shot made me remember that Johnstown was devastated by a flood about 120 years ago. Town is divided by that river. What I find most interesting about that shot is the concrete embankments running underneath the bridge - flood control measure.
Really love the night shot, too!
