The external light is what makes the difference, right? My 100 mm macro with the extension tube didn't look ANYTHING like this. 
I also love the bee, it's so fuzzy it almost seems cuddly
The Earthfirst photo is an excellent composition, which can be hard to get when things are happening fast!
