Putting out a feeler and would like your input, please.

Regarding the 3/3 days voting for prelims/finals: Would reducing voting time from 3 days each for prelims and a final to 2 days each be a good idea?

Pros/Cons? Thoughts?

This question is for everyone in the group. Attribute the question to curiosity and nothing more - there is no hidden agenda or criticism behind the question.

I don't think dropping down to 2 days would change anything or harm the contests in any way, but I could be overlooking reasons for keeping the voting at the 3/3 split. That's why I'm asking.

Losing a day for voting would gain a day/ some extra time for shooting/submissions and might be less of a burden on hosts. Sometimes a host has a lot going on in any given month. Especially handy for months with both a monthly and a seasonal contests to run.

People are accustomed to the 3/3 days voting and could miss out on a vote if they held off for a few days. Well, until people got used to a new system.

Not really broken, so no need for a fix.

Could also work against a host who has something come up during the vote and needs that extra day of voting.

Just throwing it out there.

What are your thoughts?

Thank you for your time and comments!

on that third day of voting. By the end of day two the decisions are almost always in. I would not mind seeing that time frame tightened up so we can give the additional days to the shooting and submission parts of the month.

so if having it up for either 2 or 3 days is a definite advantage, the host could choose
and be sure to mention which one it is.

there are months and situations where having the ability to adjust the timing may be quite helpful.

I would suggest that the date and time that the voting will end should be prominent in the post, even though I bet that most people who open the post will vote at that time.

Does anyone know how much activity happens on day three? We could look at the votes at the end of day two, then compare them to the number of votes on day three to see if it matters at all.

Things tend to slow down here on the weekends.
If the 2-day limit is all weekdays, it probably covers most people.
If one of those days is a Sat or Sun, we might need all three days to cover the normal crowd.

Nothing in this thread is indicative of a change coming.

I only wanted to get a sense of how the group feels about the idea.

Again, Thank you!!

There may be some more opinions out there. I've wanted to ask the question for a good while now, and just did not do it.

because I'm ok either way. Here's my thoughts; the 2 or 3 day voting period probably matters more to those of us in the contest. The polls are run in GD and the people there don't seem to care. Otherwise we'd have hundreds of votes for each photo in the contest....

After each 24 hours (I set the timer, thank you Siri)

On the first day 77 percent of the votes came in
On the second day it was 17 percent
and on the third day the last 6 percent.

This was true for all three threads, give or take a point or two.

I'm sure this will be a little different in other contests, but I do believe it shows that the question about the value of day three is a very good one.

didn't shift for the top 8 spots for the finals. One photo jumped into 9th place on the third day. We still had a tie for 3rd place in one thread and since the host's photo was
one of the ones tied, the host put the other photo through to the finals.

So, the host massaged the finals a bit, but only because she had an entry and there was a tie. For other contests I've hosted, the finalists have been clear by the third day and I don't remember seeing results change.

I think it's quite possible that when we have so many excellent entries--as we have with the Spring contest--that the extra day can make a difference.
