there is a beautiful synagogue near me....I would LOVE to get pictures of it (the exterior) but I am leery because of the issues lately with rightwing hatemongers......should I go for it?

Talk to the Rabbi or whoever is in charge. I think you have a truly great opportunity to not only get good photos, but to help mend fences.
