I'm thinking about upgrading my camera, which is is approximately 10 (?) years old. Any suggestions regarding online sites?
Thank you!

(18,635 posts)It is odd (not really) that when you look up an item on one, the price is the same on the other. Or anywhere else. Not much bargaining going on w/cameras, lenses, etc.
You can get some good deals on used equipment. Caveat emptor!

(14,889 posts)where the camera that I'm contemplating was sooooooo much more cheaper than any other site. I googled the BBB about this site, and there are numerous complaints, etc. hence my apprehension about purchasing online, although I'm sure I may (and I reiterate may) get a slightly "better" deal.
I've purchased many items via Amazon and have been very happy with all purchases. Guess that I'll look at them again.
Thank you for your input.

(19,459 posts)One of the most important things to check when purchasing online is whether or not the equipment carries the full manufacturer's US warranty. There is a significant amount of gray-ware sold on the internet. These "deals" usually have a price less than that offered by other vendors for the same product; or, they may come bundled with a lot of extra equipment while still costing less, or about the same. They often claim to have a US warranty, which turns out to be the store's warranty, not the manufacturer's. These are often sold by the discount camera stores in the Brooklyn area.
One of the reasons to be careful about this is that some companies, like Nikon, will not service a gray-market product. My understanding is that Nikon will not even sell the parts for repair for a gray-market item.
Not the only thing to be cautious about, but it can be a real problem.

I've also bought from
Adorama-- https://www.adorama.com
and Cameta http://www.cameta.com
All three of these are the top recommendations of the photography groups I subscribe to, and I have been happy dealing with them over the years.
As others have said, wherever you buy from, beware of grey market goods and be aware of return and warranty policies on what you buy.
If you're anywhere near NYC, stop into B&H-- the store itself is a something to be seen.

(14,889 posts)I'm finding out that any reputable online dealer's prices are comparable to local camera shops, so I may go that route. You know, buy local!

(60,071 posts)That way, you will be able to use the old lenses. Of course, if the old lenses suck, you are free to choose any brand. Be sure to handle the camera to see how it feels in the hand.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!
