Related: About this forumHas anyone taken their DSLR through airport security recently?
I'm leaving for the East Coast in the morning; I've looked through the TSA and SFO sites, and I'm still a bit confused (no surprises there).
It sounds like they want you to put your camera into a separate bin for scanning, but you aren't allowed to put anything underneath. Does anyone know if the lens can remain attached to the camera body? I'm a bit paranoid about having the lens off of the body, and possibly rolling around inside the bin during inspection; also, having someone manhandle the equipment.
Any answers? I tried calling the TSA office at SFO, but no one picked up.
Thanks in advance.

(18,622 posts)In all my years of travel, I have only one time inside an airport (forget where) had security ask me to turn it on, etc.

(19,459 posts)I'll have the battery out; it and a spare will be in side pockets with caps on. If they want me to turn it on I'll have to load it up. The whole outfit will be in a hardened lowpro pack.

(31,464 posts)I left my camera in the bag, with 85-250 attached, kit lens in the pocket, plus a GoPro with lcd screen, chargers, cables, etc.
The did stop me...because I also had forgotten that I had a corkscrew/bottle opener in an outside pocket. That was considered a weapon and they confiscated it. But no one ever touched my camera, I didn't have to take anything apart or take anything out of the bag.

(19,459 posts)I'm going to be running on practically no sleep at that point (5:00 am) so the less there is to confuse me the better off I'll be. I'm not taking much kit, just the camera body and lens, a couple of extra batteries with the caps on, and a charger.
Thanks for the insight.

(19,459 posts)Told me to place it in a separate bin for scanning. Apparently they are following a recent protocol requiring electronic devices larger than a cell phone be placed in a separate bin for scanning. I asked about the DSLR before I got to the checkpoint and they said yes, required.
On leaving DC I was given TSA pre-check status, and they left the camera in the bag.
