I've been scanning some pretty old photos, and I ran across this one.

She is one of my great-grandmothers, my grandmother's mother. Her name was Emma Peterson Lundin and she was from Sweden. I wish I'd known her...

This was most likely taken in the early 1900's and I agree--it looks contemporary, more like something we might make today.

20. It's the simple hairdo and lack of makeup. Even more than clothes I find those to be clues...

...to which decade photos were taken in the 20th century.

6. I very luckily just ran across a family tree! She was born in 1860 and died in 1943! My birth year!

So somewhere between those dates.......She doesn't look very old, so I'm guessing before the turn of the century. That century!

14. I too was lucky in that my Grandmother was a shutterbug

she died in 1927 of TB, but I have a wealth of photos of her and the family from the early 1900's in Central Illinois. Even have the wedding photo of my Great Grandparents along with an assortment of others. I scanned in a bunch of them about a year ago. It was a slow process as I was also putting in the information that she and my Mother had penciled on the backs of the photos.

But whoever looks at the scanned photos will know who these people were.

Usually, just formal, still portraits of whole bodies.

Only a couple were formal portraits.

Maybe that's the kind of people they were? No idea.

In my family I was the first grandchild to be born in 1951, and my four grandparents were all still living and close to 60 years old at the time. So I have many wonderful memories of my grandparents and I'm very thankful. The really cool thing is that all 4 of my great-grandmothers were living when I was born. They all were able to see me and hold me as a baby. Sadly the great-grandfathers had already passed by that time. I have clear memories of 2 of my 4 great-grandmothers.

I really feel that family closeness and memories of the older folks is a thing that should be encouraged for all young families. The benefits to the children are much greater than any awkwardness or inconvenience that SOME families might have. Of course every situation is different and not all families can be together.

How very cool you knew and remember your grandparents! I remember mine as well, and it's great.

None of my great-grandparents (except for one) had survived till then and the one surviving great, I only have vague memories of.

The photos make them real. I agree about closeness and memories are important. We hung together pretty well except that there were far-flung family members that made it difficult to stay in touch.

I wish I had seen this picture and so many others while my parents were around to talk about them.
