Smoke is at unhealthy levels, even at that distance.

(149,611 posts)We are so overdue for rain. That would help not only putting out the fires, but also clearing the skies and getting rid of all the particulate matter floating around.
Thanks for the great photos! They show so clearly what's going on.

(6,228 posts)if some folks will just move from California if their house totally burned down. Just like with folks who live in areas where they get hurricanes every year.

(19,459 posts)Re-building may prove prohibitively expensive, especially for folks who've been there any length of time.
I think the towns of Paradise and Magalia are gone for good. I spent a lot of time there growing up as my Grandparents lived in Paradise, and an aunt/uncle/cousins lived in Magalia.

Was it that bad during the Santa Rosa fires?

(17,108 posts)on Mission Street. I've sold out of all my furnace filters, because people are attaching them to fans and using them as indoor air filters. We've been filled with people looking for face mask filters and air purifiers. Fortunately, we had pallets of face masks to put out, but our Ace supplier has no air purifiers in the whole state of California. I've got to go out and work in it, but aside from that, I've been barely going out.
It's hard to comprehend unless you actually go out and witness it. And we're 175 miles from Paradise.

The last one is exquisitely beautiful, despite its visual depiction of the consequences of ignoring climate change and its impact before it's too late.

Thank you for the compliment. I love cell phone cameras.

(27,814 posts)The composition is perfect, and your ability to capture the right frame in the right light is genius (and not coincidence, so don't even go there.)
The third photo in the series is truly astounding, both in its simplicity and in its complexity.
As for "cell phone cameras", it is my view (despite being the widow of a photography nut, who spent ridiculous amounts of money on gizzmos and gadgets) that it is ultimately the eye of the beholder that captures the moment at the perfect time - and the technology behind that capture is ultimately rendered irrelevant.
Thanks again for sharing - I find that third photo more mesmerizing with every viewing.

And please let me take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the way in which Jeff welcomed me to DU, and to offer you my condolences on his passing. He was a great help to me in encouraging my photography, and with technical help. And I really miss the DUzy's. He was a good man, and this place hasn't been the same without him. Know that my best thoughts and wishes go with you.
And thank you so much for your kind words. I have a lot yet to learn about the technical aspects of Photography, and I don't practice it enough to really improve. I really like that you enjoyed the photos. Here is one more which you may (or may not) enjoy. I find it appealing but would be hard pressed to say why:

(2,809 posts)The massive ground fog of brown smoke we descended through was sobering, frightening. Everyone on the plane got a bit silent looking at it. Once down into it, appears hazy like your pics. I have my air filters running in the house again, I get used to that, then open the door and gasp. It cracks me up a bit to be wearing my masks to do outdoor activity, seeing some others at the fringes of shopping centers sucking on their cigarettes, damn the torpedoes.
My neighbors and I narrowly escaped disaster in the recent Ranch Fire that blazed away as close as 15 feet from my home. Turns out the sprinklers I ran for days 24/7 beforehand on the hillside forest salvaged one of the few green areas left here. Some other neighbors in the next block who I suggested do the same but ignored my advice... weren't so lucky, now living in trailers cleaning up the mess.
It's a good thing I was away during Trump's visit. I'd have been tempted to fly a Trump-baby dirigible in sight of the orange menace, and probably would have been arrested.
What it takes to convince some people they elected a worthless shyster demagogue simply astounds me, but I find it interesting that the "rake" comments from richie-rich who has undoubtedly never raked one leaf or twig in his fatass life turned the lights on for a few of the "Lock Her Up" crowd standing in the middle of climate change disaster. Like, really?
By the way, some of the neighbors up the street were of the red-hatted variety have since likely humbled to some reality. Lately they still be hiding away in those trailers...watching their Fox News and... I'll let the real POTUS and wife say it:

(1,105 posts)We're up Hwy 97 about 20 miles from the Canadian border. After the horror that was the summer of 2015 we've been pretty lucky with actual fires. Smoke, not so much, last year we had 67 smoke filled days during fire season.
Yuck, new abnormal.

(1,105 posts)I was responding to someone from Entiat, she asked if I was talking to some right wing whacko. I said no, a nice person on DU. She was surprised that anyone progressive lived in Entiat
You guys do seem to get hammered just about every year, any idea what makes your area such a touchstone for fire?
PS We're going down to Wilder's to pick up our truck with it's newly rebuilt transmission and new transfer case. We'll send a smile your way as we go through your town.

(24,728 posts)Awesome! Yes, there are quite a few of us libs here! We just elected a Dem Rep - Dr. Kim Schrier!
Where are you?
Rural_Progressive
(1,105 posts)just kidding we love living just east of Tonasket. We're up on the west edge of the Highlands about 2900 ft.
Sure wish I could say we elected a Dem Rep but no, we've got more years of good old Joel Kretz. He did do a good job of getting a bill passed that made it legal for us to help each other out fighting wildfires but that's about all the good I can say about him.

(1,105 posts)Now that is impressive. No we don't have the pleasure of being represented by dear Cathy, they took her away from us a while back. Nope, we've got the delightful Dan Newhouse speaking on our behalf (major snark, sarcasm sign held up behind me)

(24,728 posts)Kim Schrier! She beat out - wait for it - DINO ROSSI! If you've lived in Washington for awhile you'll recognize that old zombie retread who just won't GO AWAY!
Reichert finally retired. Believe it or not we are lumped in with some parts of the west side!
We should meet for coffee sometime!! Pybus?
Happy Thanksgiving! Nice to meet you!

(1,105 posts)My dear wife saw some campaign stuff about Rossi and I thought she must have unearthed some ancient information. Had no idea that worn out, clueless, reprobate was still alive much less muddling about in the toxic world of the GOP.
Fantastic that you guys kicked him to the curb but you're kinda cheating if you're getting help from the other side of the mountains.
So glad to hear that one of the pimples on the buttocks of government has finally bailed out. Reichert was a lousy sheriff and didn't get any better as a rep.
We sent you good thoughts as we motored through Entiat yesterday and yes we should have a coffee!! I assume there is some way to PM on this platform? Haven't done much here since I do get in trouble from time to time here. You know the old" too conservative for my liberal friends and too liberal for my conservative friends" deal. Probably right where I should be.
Looking forward to meeting you in person and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and all of those you care about!!

(19,459 posts)We're concerned about the chemicals being deposited into our lungs and bloodstream after heavy smoke concentrations for extended periods of time over the last few years.
The Camp Fire has destroyed over 12,000 structures (so far) and a large number of cars, etc.. I can't even imagine the broad range of nasty pollutants in the smoke currently blanketing NorCal.
