Related: About this forumInviting you to walk along to see the back gardens of some German houses
There was a close death in my family, and an immediate flight to Germany became very important. I got here, the service was yesterday, and this afternoon I took a stroll to help soothe my soul seeing the life in the garden areas behind the houses where my relatives live. Hope you enjoy walking with me.elleng

(7,592 posts)When I was stationed there people without yards like those living in apartments etc.would rent little plots of land in which to grow things. One such group of those right outside my window had Apple, Pear and other mature fruit trees in addition to veggies and flowers and the smell in Spring was absolutely, breathtakingly wonderful.
I can still smell that grove now, 40 years later. That was a really nice country and Bayern was just lovely. I was from Florida and had never even seen snow, lol.
But, I'm sorry for the loss necessitating your journey .
your are describing what I saw - but did not expound on. I walked the back yards, and also those very plots you describe that people pay for to bike to and tend. It was glorious to see them, and just because I have your attention let me tell you I once was in a RUBBER boat in a river in Costa Rica with crocodiles around us, and our guide, about 20 years old, looked at me and said" I want to live long enough to see snow".

Say, you know how most of those little plots of land will have a shed of some sort on them to store gardening equipment, etc. in? Overheard, while driving young soldiers just in the country for the 1st time to their new post.
"Gosh, some of these Germans are really poor huh? Their houses are so small!" The other guy, "Wow look! They even have to grow their own food".

(22,378 posts)I'm feeling supported by DU love. I lost my FOuRTH brother. The one who was (almost) the most like me, and the one who traveled with me to Africa and Egypt. My foundation is so rocked, and I am so lost. I just flounder at the moment, and am happy my back yard walk found resonance, and my pain is heard and solace extended. I love you all.

(13,776 posts)How smart and intuitive of you to go for a walk to look for beauty to soothe your soul. It's so painful to lose someone with whom you have such a deep connection. I'm glad you have memories of your travels together.

(9,580 posts)My mother was a war bride, just for some context. We would walk to some gardens not too far away, go through a gate, and she would holler, "Hallooooo," and the owner would present themselves, apparently not too far from the entrance. Mom would then proceed to pick out lettuce, tomatoes, and other veggies, and put them in our mesh shopping bag.
The gardens were lush and lovely, brimming with all kinds of goodies.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Mira.

(3,250 posts)of the enchanting, and beautiful place, where your relatives live. The gardens are so lovingly tended by a gifted gardener(s) who work with nature as a guide. sweet, peaceful place that to take in as you wander, refresh your senses, and be embraced by the timeless.

(22,378 posts)and yes, these are people tending the land with true care. The gardens are small, but plentiful, and the gardeners are devoted. A joy to see.
